Add classic Cape fynbos character to the garden with Protea laurifolia, a striking indigenous protea known for its beautiful grey-green foliage and elegant, bearded flower heads. In Cape Town, it flowers mainly during autumn and winter, with blooms sometimes extending from April into spring. Its large flower heads range from soft silvery pink to creamy white, with distinctive dark or white bearded inner bracts. A hardy and long-lived choice, this water-wise protea is ideal for fynbos gardens, screening, background planting and wildlife-friendly landscapes. It performs best in full sun with excellent drainage and is particularly well suited to dry and exposed positions once established, provided the soil is well drained.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Soft pink to cream, beautifully bearded blooms.
  • Attractive grey-green leaves add year-round interest.
  • Highly drought tolerant once established.
  • Its nectar rich flowers attract Cape sugarbirds and other nectar-feeding birds.

Plant & Care

Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and good air circulation. Water regularly while establishing, particularly through the first two summers, then reduce watering once well rooted. Avoid heavy fertilisers and manure, as proteas naturally grow in nutrient-poor soils. Keep the root area undisturbed and mulch around the plant rather than digging or cultivating around its roots. Pruning is generally limited to removing old flower stems or lightly trimming when needed.

Did You Know?

The grey-blue appearance of the foliage comes from a natural waxy coating on the leaves, which can be rubbed off. This distinctive foliage is one of the useful features for distinguishing Protea laurifolia from the very similar Protea neriifolia.
