With its beautiful umbrella-shaped canopy of glossy, dark green leaves, the Natal Mahogany is a magnificent evergreen tree that brings structure, shade and year-round beauty to the garden. In spring, it produces small, sweetly scented flowers, followed by non-edible fruit capsules that mature and burst open in summer to reveal striking orange-red seeds. A superb choice for creating dense shade, screening or a lush tropical feel, it is well suited to sunny and semi-shaded positions in sheltered Cape Town gardens.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Beautiful umbrella-shaped canopy creates generous, dense shade as the tree matures.
  • Glossy evergreen foliage provides year-round greenery and garden structure
  • Sweetly scented spring flowers add a delightful seasonal fragrance to the garden.
  • Striking summer seeds provide a wonderful burst of orange and red when the fruit capsules split open.

Plant & Care

Plant your Natal Mahogany in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to semi-shade, ideally in a sheltered position protected from strong winds. Water regularly while establishing, especially during Cape Town’s dry summer months, then reduce watering once the tree is well established. Mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and keep competing weeds away, while avoiding piling mulch directly against the trunk. Prune lightly to shape the canopy or remove damaged and crossing branches, preferably towards the end of winter. Give young trees additional protection from cold and drying winds until they are well established.

Did You Know?

The Natal Mahogany's summer fruit capsules split open to reveal bright orange-red seeds, creating an unexpected splash of colour against its deep green evergreen foliage. The seeds are especially attractive to birds and wildlife, making this indigenous tree a beautiful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
