The King Protea 'Madiba' (Protea cynaroides) is the most magnificent of all proteas, producing spectacular dinner plate-sized blooms that can reach up to 30cm across. Named in honor of Nelson Mandela, this iconic indigenous fynbos creates breathtaking focal points in water-wise gardens with its massive pink and cream flower heads surrounded by colorful bracts that bloom from autumn through winter when most plants are dormant.
Plant in full sun with well-draining, sandy, acidic soil and avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions. Water deeply but infrequently once established, and never use phosphate-rich fertilizers as proteas prefer nutrient-poor soils. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage bushier growth and remove spent blooms.
