Lycium barbarum - Goji Berry
A hardy, deciduous shrub producing clusters of bright red, nutrient-rich berries in late summer through autumn in Cape Town’s climate. Known as a “superfood,” goji berries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making them perfect for smoothies, teas, and healthy snacking. The plant thrives in full sun, tolerates a wide range of soils, and is drought-hardy once established. Category: Edibles / Superfood / Ornamental Fruit Shrub. With its delicate purple flowers and vibrant berries, it’s both productive and ornamental.
Plant in well-drained soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Position in full sun for best fruiting, though partial shade is tolerated. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce as the plant matures. Stake young plants for support during the first two years. Prune lightly to encourage airflow and berry production. Fertilize in spring with compost or organic feed.
Goji berries are also called “wolfberries” and have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Their leaves are edible too, they can be added fresh to salads for a nutritious boost.
