Water Pear (Syzygium guineense) – a hardy, indigenous evergreen that performs beautifully in Western Cape gardens whether grown as a single shade tree or trained into a dense, full hedge. Its glossy foliage creates a lush, year-round screen, offering excellent privacy, cooling shade and natural noise softening. From August to December it carries clusters of creamy white, lightly scented flowers that draw bees and seasonal pollinators.
Why You'll Love It:
• Fast-growing evergreen that provides consistent screening
• Ideal as a shade tree or clipped into a thick hedge
• Flowers in late winter to early summer with soft, creamy blooms
• Indigenous and well-suited to Western Cape conditions
• Low-maintenance and water-wise once established
Planting & Care:
Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Water regularly during the first year, then reduce as the tree establishes. Feed in spring with a balanced tree fertiliser for strong, healthy growth. Stake young plants for support and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Space 4–5 m apart for hedging or plant individually as feature trees.
