A resilient succulent shrub with a regal name, Crown of Thorns is loved for its clusters of bright red, pink, or yellow bracts that appear almost year-round in Cape Town’s mild climate, with peak flowering from late spring through autumn (October–April). Its thorny stems and glossy green leaves make it both striking and hardy, perfect for sunny patios, rockeries, and water-wise gardens. With its long-lasting blooms and tough nature, this plant brings colour and character to any space while thriving on minimal care.
Plant in sandy, well-draining soil and position in full sun for best flowering. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Prune lightly to shape and remove dead stems, but handle with care due to its thorns. Protect from excessive winter rain by ensuring good drainage. It is a tough, low-maintenance plant that rewards with continuous colour.
Euphorbia milii is believed to have been introduced to Europe from Madagascar in the 19th century. Its name “Crown of Thorns” comes from the legend that it was the plant woven into the crown placed on Christ’s head, making it one of the most symbolically significant ornamentals in cultivation.
