A beautiful evergreen shrub with an elegant upright habit and masses of soft pink, informal-double flowers. Camellia sasanqua 'Jennifer Susan' brings colour to the garden from autumn into winter, when its large, gently curled blooms stand out against glossy green foliage. More sun-tolerant than many traditional camellias, it performs well in full sun to semi-shade and makes an excellent specimen, hedge, screen or espalier. Given the right soil and position, it is a long-lived and rewarding addition to the garden.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Evergreen foliage provides year-round structure
  • Soft pink, informal-double flowers with gently curled petals
  • Attractive glossy foliage even when not in flower
  • Long-lived and reliable when grown in suitable soil

Plant & Care

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a position with full sun to semi-shade, providing some protection from harsh afternoon heat in very hot or exposed gardens. Water regularly while establishing and keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, particularly through the dry Western Cape summer. Avoid allowing the root zone to dry out completely, but do not plant where winter rain causes prolonged waterlogging. Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. Prune only if needed to shape or control size, preferably after flowering, as unnecessary pruning can remove developing flower-producing growth.

Sasanqua camellias are among the earliest camellias to flower, bringing a welcome flush of colour to the garden just as many summer-flowering plants are winding down.
