Balsemkopvia | Bulbine Frutescens 'Yellow'

A tough, water-wise South African indigenous succulent perennial that brings cheerful colour and easy-care structure to Western Cape gardens. It produces slender spikes of bright yellow, star-shaped flowers above fleshy, green leaves, forming spreading clumps that work beautifully in borders, mass plantings, rockeries and water-wise landscapes. Best in full sun, it is also happy in semi-shade and becomes increasingly drought tolerant once established.

Plant & Care

Space 40-60 cm apart for mass plantings or use individually in mixed borders. Plant in well-drained soil and avoid areas that remain waterlogged after winter rain. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering once established, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. If needed, feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering. Trim back untidy or tired growth when necessary and remove spent flower heads if you want to encourage further flowering.

Bulbine's flowers have distinctive fluffy, yellow stamens that give each little star-shaped bloom a soft, almost fuzzy appearance and they are a favourite with bees.
