The Chandler Strawberry is one of the world's most widely loved and historically important varieties. In Cape Town’s Western Cape climate, Chandler strawberries flower from late winter into spring, with fruit developing from spring into early summer (Sept-Dec). This makes them a perfect choice for gardeners who want a reliable harvest during the festive season and into the new year. Ideal for home gardens, pots, hanging baskets, or raised beds, Chandler strawberries thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. They are excellent for fresh eating, desserts, jams, and smoothies.
Plant Chandler Strawberries in full sun with rich, well-drained soil. Water consistently during Cape Town’s dry summer months (December–March), keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and keep fruit clean. Remove runners if you want larger berries, or allow them to root for more plants. Feed with a balanced fertiliser during establishment, then switch to a potassium-rich feed once flowering begins. Protect ripening fruit from birds with netting.
The Chandler variety was developed in California and quickly became a favourite worldwide for its exceptional flavour and large fruit size. In Cape Town’s climate, it’s especially prized for producing berries right in time for the festive season, making it a delicious addition to holiday tables.
