A jewel for every garden, Little Ruby is a compact foliage plant that dazzles with its deep burgundy-purple leaves, creating a striking contrast against green landscapes. Its rich ruby-purple foliage intensifies in warm weather and provides colour throughout the year in the Western Cape climate. This versatile plant is perfect for edging pathways, mass planting in beds, or brightening up containers and hanging baskets. It thrives in full sun but adapts well to semi-shade.
Plant Little Ruby in well-drained soil and give it plenty of sun for the richest foliage colour, though it will tolerate semi-shade. Water regularly during Cape Town’s dry summer months (December-March), but once established it can tolerate short dry periods, but performs best with regular watering during hot weather. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat, compact shape and encourage fresh growth. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to boost colour and vigour. Protect from frost in cooler inland areas, though it thrives in the milder coastal climate.
Alternanthera is often nicknamed “Joseph’s Coat” for its colourful foliage varieties. Little Ruby is one of the most compact cultivars, bred specifically for its intense ruby tones and resilience, making it a favourite for modern landscapers who want bold colour without the fuss.
