Portugal Quince is a productive deciduous fruit tree prized for its large, fragrant, golden-yellow fruit. The pear-shaped quinces have firm, aromatic flesh and are particularly good when cooked, making them ideal for jams, jellies, preserves and desserts. Fruit ripens in autumn developing a rich golden-yellow colour and wonderful fragrance as it matures.
A vigorous, upright-growing tree, Portugal Quince is a rewarding choice for home orchards and productive gardens. It produces attractive white to pale pink flowers in spring and thrives in full sun with deep, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Quince trees are generally self-fertile, so a second tree is not essential for fruit production.
Plant in full sun in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during summer, particularly while establishing and during fruit development. Add compost when planting and feed in spring with a suitable fruit-tree fertiliser. Prune lightly to maintain shape and remove unwanted or crossing growth.
Quince fruit is generally too firm and astringent to enjoy raw, but cooking transforms the flesh, giving it a softer texture, sweeter flavour and beautiful rosy colour. Its naturally high pectin content also makes it particularly well suited to jams and jellies.
