Agave vilmoriniana Octopus Agave. A dramatic succulent with long, arching leaves that twist and curl like tentacles, the Octopus Agave is a true statement plant. Its grey-green foliage forms a large rosette, creating bold architectural interest in Cape Town’s water-wise gardens. Mature plants (after 8–10 years) produce towering flower stalks with clusters of yellow blooms, attracting pollinators before the plant completes its life cycle. Perfect for rockeries, feature planting, or large containers, it thrives in full sun and dry conditions. Bring home the Octopus Agave for sculptural drama and low-maintenance beauty.

Plant & Care

Plant in sandy, well-draining soil and position in full sun. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between watering, and reduce watering in winter. Protect from frost and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Handle with care due to sharp leaf tips. After flowering, the plant dies but produces offsets (“pups”) that can be replanted.

Did You Know?

The Octopus Agave gets its name from its curling, tentacle-like leaves. It is monocarpic, meaning it flowers once at maturity before dying, but leaves behind pups to continue its legacy.

Toxicity Note

Agave species are mildly toxic if ingested and their sap can cause skin irritation. Handle with gloves and keep away from pets and children.
