‘Snake Plants’, sometimes called Mother-in-law’s-tongue, are among the toughest and most reliable plants you can grow. This striking variety, ‘Laurentii Golden’, features tall, sword-shaped leaves with deep green centres edged in glowing golden-yellow margins. Whether indoors, on your balcony, or in the garden, these spiky beauties create bold contrast when grouped with other plants. They are also one of the best natural air-purifiers, especially valued by allergy sufferers. In Cape Town’s Western Cape climate, they thrive year-round with minimal care, occasionally producing fragrant greenish-white flower spikes in late summer (February–March). Timeless and resilient, Snake Plants remain a favourite in apartments, offices, and homes across the region.
Plant in well-drained soil or a quality potting mix. Position in bright indirect light indoors, or semi-shade outdoors. Water sparingly, allow soil to dry between waterings, especially in winter. Feed lightly in spring and summer to encourage growth. Remove old or damaged leaves at the base to keep plants looking fresh.
Sansevieria’s fibres were once used to make ropes and bowstrings, proof that its leaves are as strong as they are beautiful.
