Lemon Buchu is a compact indigenous shrub with tiny aromatic leaves that release a sweet lemon scent when crushed. From late winter through summer, it produces masses of pretty mauve to purple flowers, bringing colour and fragrance to the garden.
Growing to approximately 50cm–1m high, it has a dense, rounded habit and is ideal for fynbos gardens, borders, rockeries, containers and mass planting. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is water-wise once established.
Plant 20–30cm apart in well-drained soil in full sun. Water well while establishing, particularly during the first summer, then reduce once established. Mulch lightly to help keep the roots cool and retain moisture.
The name Agathosma comes from Greek words meaning “pleasant smell”, referring to the aromatic oils found in the leaves and fruit. Each buchu species has its own distinctive fragrance, with Lemon Buchu giving off a characteristic citrusy scent.
