Striped Mondo Grass is a refined, evergreen groundcover featuring arching, strap-like leaves with striking creamy-white and green stripes. Well suited to Cape Town gardens, it provides year-round colour and texture, even during cooler months. In summer, delicate pale lilac to white flowers appear among the foliage, followed by decorative blue-black berries. Its compact growth makes it ideal for borders, mass planting, containers and Japanese-inspired gardens.
Plant in well-drained soil in semi-shade or shade. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce as the plant becomes water-wise. Trim back old foliage in late winter (August) to refresh growth and maintain neatness. Ideal for mass planting, edging pathways, or filling shaded corners where few other plants thrive. Avoid prolonged exposure to full sun, which can scorch the striped leaves.
Although commonly called “Mondo Grass,” Ophiopogon is not a true grass but a member of the lily family. Its striped foliage has made it a staple in Japanese gardens, where it is valued for its ability to create calm, flowing lines and year-round structure.
