White Genoa Fig is a productive deciduous fruit tree prized for its sweet, medium to large figs with yellowish-green skin and pink to straw-coloured flesh. The fruit is delicious fresh and is also excellent for jams, preserves and drying. In South Africa, White Genoa can produce an early crop from November to mid-December, followed by its main summer crop.

Fast-growing and medium-sized, White Genoa is an excellent choice for home orchards and productive gardens. It is self-fertile and produces attractive large, lobed leaves during the growing season. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil, where it will reward you with sweet, flavourful figs and attractive seasonal interest.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Produces sweet, pink-fleshed figs with soft green skin.
  • Can produce an early breba crop as well as a later summer crop.
  • Self-fertile, so a second tree is not required for fruit production.
  • Delicious fresh and excellent for jams, preserves and drying.
  • Attractive large, lobed leaves provide lush summer interest.

Plant & Care

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during fruit development, then reduce watering once established. Add compost when planting and feed during the growing season with a suitable fruit-tree fertiliser. Prune lightly in winter to maintain shape, taking care not to remove too much of the previous season’s growth, which carries the early crop. Avoid waterlogged soil.

Did You Know?

Figs do not continue to ripen after picking, so for the sweetest flavour, allow White Genoa figs to ripen fully on the tree. Pick them when they are fully coloured, soft to the touch and beginning to droop from the branch.
