Fig Adam is one of South Africa's oldest and best known fig varieties, producing large, richly flavoured figs with purple skin and dark red to purple flesh. In the Western Cape, it can produce an early crop from November to December, followed by its main crop in late summer to autumn.
A vigorous, deciduous tree that grows well in warm, sunny gardens. The fruit is delicious eaten fresh or dried and is also excellent for jams and preserves.
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly during the growing and fruiting season, then reduce once established. Prune lightly in winter to maintain shape and encourage productive growth.
‘Adam’ is one of the oldest fig varieties grown in South Africa and has a long history of being grown for both fresh eating and drying.
