Anna Apple is a productive deciduous fruit tree prized for its crisp, juicy apples with sweet, slightly tart flavour. The fruit has greenish-yellow skin with an attractive red blush and is delicious eaten fresh or used for cooking and baking. In the Western Cape, Anna apples are generally harvested from late December into January.
Vigorous and well suited to warmer climates, Anna has a low chilling requirement, making it a good choice for areas with mild winters. Plant in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil for healthy growth and good fruit production.
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during fruit development, but avoid waterlogged conditions. Feed in spring with a suitable fruit-tree fertiliser and prune during winter to maintain shape and encourage productive growth. Anna is partially self-fertile, but planting a compatible low-chill apple variety nearby will improve pollination and fruit production.
Anna apples are known for their crisp texture and refreshing flavour straight from the tree. As an early-season apple, Anna is particularly valued for its fresh, juicy fruit at the beginning of the apple harvest season.
