Bring a splash of vibrant colour to the water-wise garden with the striking Purple Vygie, a hardy South African indigenous succulent shrublet known for its spectacular daisy-like flowers. It typically produces its main floral display in late winter to spring, particularly August and September, with flowering time varying somewhat with local conditions. Its flowers are typically a vivid purple to mauve, with large, showy flower heads that open fully in warm, sunny conditions. Perfect for rockeries, embankments, slopes, succulent gardens and colourful mass plantings, this drought-tolerant vygie is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to create a beautiful, low-water landscape. Plant it in full sun and provide sharply drained soil, particularly in areas with winter rainfall. It also works beautifully in containers where its colourful flowering display can be enjoyed up close.

Why  You'll Love It:

  • Produces a spectacular display of vibrant purple to mauve daisy-like flowers.
  • Water smart and drought tolerant, making it ideal for Cape Town’s dry summers.
  • Thrives in full sun, where good light encourages abundant flowering.
  • Perfect for rockeries, slopes, embankments and water-wise gardens.
  • Its colourful flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.

Plant Care

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, preferably sandy or loamy, and avoid heavy clay, as poor drainage and overwatering can cause the plant to rot. Water well after planting to help establish the plant, then allow the soil to dry between waterings. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once established and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid overwatering during its summer resting period and ensure excellent drainage through the winter rains. Pruning is generally not necessary, but you can lightly trim the plant after flowering if you want to maintain a neat shape.

Did You Know?

The Purple Vygie’s flowers have a clever daily routine: they open fully in the late afternoon when they have received enough sunlight and warmth, and bees are among their important pollinators. Even its name tells a story, Lampranthus comes from Greek words meaning “bright” or “shining” flower.
