Wild Banana, also known as Giant White Bird of Paradise, is a striking evergreen with huge tropical leaves and spectacular blue and white flowers. Flowering can occur throughout the year, with peak flowering from spring to summer.
A vigorous, clump-forming plant reaching 6m or more, it thrives in sun to semi-shade and is well suited to coastal gardens. Drought tolerant once established, it needs plenty of space due to its vigorous root system.
IMPORTANT: Our Strelitzias are grown outdoors, where wind, sun, and other natural elements can cause the leaves to tear or develop slight browning on the edges. This is completely normal and part of the plant’s natural growth pattern. Even in your own home garden, your Strelitzia will go through the same process over the years. Growers also trim older leaves to encourage strong, upright growth, so receiving a plant with cut stems is not a sign of poor quality. It’s simply part of healthy maintenance, development, and the natural characteristics of the plant.
Plant in full sun to semi-shade, allowing plenty of space for the plant to develop. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once established. Plant well away from buildings, paving and underground services as the root system can be vigorous. Remove older or damaged leaves to maintain a neat appearance.
Despite its common name, Wild Banana is not a true banana. Its enormous leaves and banana-like growth habit are responsible for the name, but it belongs to the Strelitzia family and is closely related to the famous Bird of Paradise plant, Strelitzia reginae.
