Dianthus 'Aura' is a compact, floriferous perennial with charming, ruffled flowers above neat blue-green foliage. Its blooms have the classic frilled, layered appearance associated with carnations, bringing long-lasting seasonal colour to sunny borders, rockeries, containers and smaller gardens. Its tidy, low-growing habit makes it especially useful for pots, window boxes and mixed plantings.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once established, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering. Avoid waterlogged areas. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage further blooms and lightly trim after flowering to maintain a neat shape. Feed lightly during active growth, especially when grown in containers.
Dianthus is the same plant family that includes carnations. Many dianthus varieties share the carnation’s distinctive ruffled petals and compact, tufted growth, making them a lovely choice when you want a similar look in a smaller, more garden-friendly plant.
