A striking evergreen perennial with tall stems crowned by clusters of pure white flowers in midsummer, perfectly suited to Cape Town’s climate. Flowering from November through February, it adds elegance to borders, pathways, and mass plantings. Ideal for coastal gardens, water-wise landscapes, and as a hardy ornamental, this agapanthus thrives in full sun but tolerates semi-shade.
Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Water moderately, especially during the flowering season, but reduce watering in winter. Remove spent flower stalks to encourage new blooms and maintain neatness. Divide clumps every few years to rejuvenate growth. Feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser in spring for optimal flowering.
Agapanthus is often called the “Lily of the Nile,” even though it’s native to South Africa, making it one of the country’s most iconic indigenous garden plants.
