Aloe arborescens – Krantz Aloe. This iconic South African aloe bursts into vivid scarlet-orange flower spikes from mid-winter through early spring (June–September in Cape Town), creating a spectacular display that draws in sunbirds and bees. Its sprawling, multi-stemmed growth makes it excellent for hedging, screening, and dramatic focal points in water-wise gardens. Thrives in full sun and tolerates coastal conditions. A resilient aloe that brings fiery colour and ecological value to your garden.
Plant in sandy, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Water sparingly, especially during Cape Town’s rainy winters, as aloes dislike soggy roots. Remove spent flower stalks to encourage fresh growth. Apply a light compost dressing in spring to boost flowering. Prune back older stems to maintain shape and encourage new shoots.
Krantz Aloe has long been used in traditional medicine for its soothing properties, and in rural areas it’s often planted along fences as a natural barrier against intruders and grazing animals.
