Brighten your home or garden with the elegant Song of India , a striking evergreen prized for its vibrant green leaves boldly edged in golden-yellow. Its colourful foliage creates year-round interest, making it a popular choice for indoor décor, patios, tropical gardens, and sheltered landscapes. Mature outdoor plants may occasionally produce small, star-shaped, fragrant creamy-white flowers from late spring to summer (November to February) in the Western Cape, although flowering is infrequent and the plant is primarily valued for its ornamental foliage. Perfect as a feature plant, in decorative containers, or as part of a lush, tropical planting scheme. Thrives in bright, indirect light or semi-shade and prefers a warm, sheltered position protected from frost.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Stunning golden-variegated foliage provides vibrant colour throughout the year.
  • An easy-care evergreen that's ideal for both indoor and sheltered outdoor spaces.
  • Perfect for decorative pots, patios, entranceways, and tropical-style gardens.
  • Naturally upright growth creates an attractive architectural feature with minimal maintenance.
  • A hardy, long-lived ornamental that instantly adds warmth and elegance to any setting.

Plant & Care

Plant in well-drained soil or a premium-quality potting mix with excellent drainage. Position in bright, filtered light or semi-shade, avoiding prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Water regularly during establishment, then allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Feed in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser to encourage lush, healthy foliage. Remove any damaged or ageing leaves to keep the plant looking neat, and protect it from frost during the colder months.

Did You Know?

The colourful leaf margins of Song of India 'Variegated' are the result of natural variegation, where areas of the leaf produce less chlorophyll. This unique characteristic makes every plant a living work of art and one of the most sought-after foliage plants for brightening interiors and shaded outdoor spaces.
