A bold, architectural plant that thrives on neglect and rewards with striking upright leaves. Known as Snake Plant, this evergreen perennial is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. Its sword-shaped foliage adds strong vertical lines to any space, making it a favourite for modern homes and water-wise gardens. In Cape Town’s Western Cape climate, it occasionally produces fragrant, greenish-white flower spikes in late summer (February–March), though its foliage is the main attraction year-round.
Plant in well-drained soil or a quality potting mix. Position in bright indirect light indoors, or semi-shade outdoors. Water sparingly, allow soil to dry between waterings, especially in winter. Feed lightly in spring and summer to encourage growth. Remove old or damaged leaves at the base to keep plants looking fresh.
Sansevieria was once used to make bowstrings thanks to its tough, fibrous leaves, a reminder of how versatile this plant has been throughout history.
